From Struggle to Strength

Trauma‑Informed Afterschool Mentorship for At‑Risk Youth

Program Summary

The Beyond the Struggle Afterschool Mentorship & Healing Program provides a safe, structured, and trauma‑informed afterschool environment for children ages 8–16 living in neighborhoods impacted by poverty, community violence, drug exposure, and unstable home conditions. The program combines mentorship, academic support, social‑emotional learning, and healing‑centered enrichment to build resilience, confidence, and long‑term stability for youth who are often overlooked by traditional systems.

Our afterschool mentorship program is built on the 12 Core Concepts of Trauma-Informed Care developed by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN). These principles guide every aspect of our work—from how we design activities to how we build relationships—ensuring that every young person is met with safety, empathy, and dignity.

To uphold this standard, all staff and volunteers are required to complete formal training in the NCTSN 12 Core Concepts before working with youth. This shared foundation helps us create a consistent, supportive environment where children can learn, heal, and thrive.

Why this is important:

Children in underserved inner‑city neighborhoods face disproportionate exposure to trauma, including:

• Community violence and gang activity

• Parental incarceration

• Substance abuse in the home

• Housing instability

• Underfunded schools

• Chronic stress and lack of safe spaces

These conditions significantly impact emotional regulation, academic performance, and long‑term life outcomes. Research shows that trauma‑informed mentorship and consistent afterschool engagement can reduce behavioral incidents, improve academic success, and strengthen protective factors that help youth thrive.
